How to Improve Your Self-Esteem at Work

In today’s day and age, we live in a society where people are always basing their self-worth on what others think of them. Whether you’re trying to fit in with the crowd, or you’re feeling like you fail to live up to your anyone’s expectations, both of these can have an impact on your self-esteem. Speaking of which, issues of self- confidence are usually prevalent in the workplace as well. If you’re someone who frequently uses social media as a huge part of your business, this can have a bigger impact on your self-esteem than normal. This is especially true when it comes to Facebook, a place where it seems like most people are living the perfect life. With that said, one of the keys to an emotionally healthier life in the workplace, is improving your self-esteem. Here are a few tips to consider.

#1. Stop Comparing Your Life To Others

One important factor in having better self-esteem in the industry, is to stop comparing yourself to others. As I mentioned before, it’s especially common for us to compare our lives to those who use social media as a major outlet for their business. When you’re on Facebook, for example, have you ever noticed that it seems like most people have the perfect life? Not to mention they often brag about their accomplishments. They have the perfect job, a flawless husband, and are always going on grand summer adventures. Eventually, this might have an impact on your self-esteem, and you’ll feel like you’re always behind in life. In the long run, this could even affect how successful you are in your business work. After all, it’s harder to be successful when you feel like your accomplishments will never match up to others.

Why aren’t you having these amazing adventures like everyone else? However, that’s where the problem is. More often than not, Facebook is just a facade. First of all, that’s not to say people don’t experience these wonderful moments in life. Many times, however, those on Facebook only show their audience what they want them to see. Obviously, many people have personal struggles they’re willing to hide when using social media. Take your focus off the lives of others, and put your focus on what you need to accomplish. When building your social media audience, remind yourself not to get caught up in what looks like a bunch of successful lives. After all, no one is perfect, and everyone has things they need to work on.

#2. The Power of Affirmations

Words are powerful, and can have both a positive and negative impact on your life. With that said, what are you speaking over your life everyday, and what are you saying about yourself? For example, are you telling yourself that you’re a failure who’s never going to amount to anything? When we speak negativity over our lives (whether it’s intentional or unintentional), we eventually begin to believe those things. If that’s the case, why not speak positivity over your life? For example, when you get up in the morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself that it’s going to be a great day. Encourage yourself throughout the day, and see how successful you’ll be in the long run. When you start speaking positive words over your life, not only will you eventually stop caring what others think, but even more so, everyone’s seemingly “perfect” life on social media, will have no impact on you.

#3. Be Optimistic About Life

It’s one thing to speak positive affirmations about yourself, but on the other hand, you should be thinking positive thoughts as well. In other words, why not look on the bright side of things, like if you make a mistake on your job? In fact, did you know that it takes more energy to focus on positive thoughts than negative thoughts? That’s why it’s so much easier for people to be negative about their circumstances. What are some ways you can be optimistic about life? If something doesn’t go the way you expect in the workplace, instead of complaining about it, try to look on the bright side of things, and learn from your mistakes. Instead of berating yourself for any failures, use them as a learning experience. On top of that, you’re also setting an example for your employees.
